Belt and Grading System at The School of Martial Arts
Grading Examinations
At The School of Martial Arts Hamilton, we hold two grading examinations each year at our Hamilton East Dojo—one mid-year and one at the end of the year. These exams give students the opportunity to progress in their martial arts journey, earn certificates, and be promoted to the next belt or belt tip.
Students are tested on their proficiency by our black belts in a formal, structured environment. Often, Master Reid Clark, the founder of Incorporated Martial Arts (IMA), attends to officiate and support students during their grading.

Black Belt in Hamilton | The School of Martial Arts
The Black Belt is revered worldwide as a symbol of martial arts mastery, discipline, and perseverance. At The School of Martial Arts Hamilton, we believe that earning a black belt is more than just receiving a piece of fabric, it represents the years of dedication, blood, sweat, and effort required to achieve excellence in martial arts.
Unfortunately, some schools and organisations treat black belts as 'honorary' or purchasable titles. At The School of Martial Arts, we maintain the prestige of the black belt by enforcing strict criteria for each rank, ensuring that every student earns their promotion through skill, dedication, and resilience. Our goal is not our number of black belts, but our quality of black belts.
Why the Black Belt Matters
Earning a black belt at The School of Martial Arts is not just a milestone, it’s a journey that teaches perseverance, resilience, and personal growth. Our structured grading ensures that students experience:
-
The challenge of pushing through setbacks
-
The reward and confidence of achieving a goal
-
True mastery of Incorporated Martial Arts (IMA) techniques
